Chelation Therapy

Chelation Therapy is part and parcel of Arterial Clearance Therapy, and the term is often used synonymously with ACT. Chelation is a widely used non-surgical therapy for heart disease and other vascular conditions. Chelation therapy is also used for autism and brain related disorders.

What Is Chelation Therapy?

Chelation Therapy is a non-surgical medical treatment that improves metabolic and circulatory function in many different ways by removing toxic metals (such as lead and cadmium) and relocating abnormally located metallic ions in the body.  This is accomplished by administering a synthetic amino acid, ethylenediaminetetraacetate (EDTA), by intravenous fusion using a tiny twenty-five-gauge needle or Teflon catheter. EDTA Chelation is a simple, inexpensive procedure that is usually done in a doctor’s clinic, and does not require hospitalization.

How Does Chelation Work?

‘Chelation’ is actually a natural life chemical process that enables living organisms to assimilate and make effective use of essential inorganic metallic elements. Chelation has been described as nature’s marriage ceremony, which weds two substances into a working partnership! Haemoglobin, for example, is a chelate of iron.

As we age, free radicals tend to build up in the cells of our bodies. Free radicals are produced as a by-product of normal body processes, but when they build up, they start to damage the cells of the body everywhere. It is largely realized today, that whether or when one succumbs to degenerative diseases like atherosclerosis depends largely on the body’s ability to defend itself against free-radical attack. Free radicals in blood vessels cause mutation of normal cells to atheroma cells (cells that are benign tumours) and promote spasm and clot formation (thrombosis).

Chelation therapy uses EDTA, a small protein-related amino acid molecule that is a chelate of metals like lead, cadmium, etc, to attract these metals where they are loosely bound in the blood vessels and cause free-radical damage. EDTA forms a chemical bond with these metals, which facilitates their removal from sites where they are in excess and causing damage.

Once the body becomes free of the unhealthy build-up of these metallic substances and free-radicals, the body’s natural healing processes have time to kick in. The time required for this healing process, explains why it often takes a few months for the full benefits of chelation therapy to be seen.

A complete course of chelation treatment usually comprises of 30 or more sessions of 3 to 4 hours each, of EDTA drip at the chelation doctor’s clinic, depending on the condition being treated. Besides as treatment for calcified coronary arteries, Chelation therapy is also useful for other vascular diseases. This method has been used for over a century for metallic poisoning during wars, chemical mishaps, etc. In such cases though, the chelating formula is altered as per the needs of the individual.

The Benefits of Chelation Therapy

Some Proven Benefits of Chelation Therapy Include:

  • Many of the benefits of Chelation therapy accrue from its main benefit of improving blood circulation in large arteries as well as small capillaries
  • Another benefit of EDTA chelation therapy is its ability to improve arterial elasticity
  • By virtue of its curbing effect on the build-up of free-radicals, EDTA chelation treatment helps restore the normal production of ‘prostacyclin’ (the “Teflon” of the arteries), which prevents spasms, blocks clots, reduces platelet “stickiness” and improves blood-flow even in diseased arteries. (Prostacyclin production turns off in the vicinity of free radical activity)
  • The main benefit of EDTA chelation treatment for individuals suffering from atherosclerosis is that it stops excessive production of free-radicals in its tracks, thus allowing damaged arteries to heal.
  • EDTA Chelation treatment has been known to reduce serum cholesterol levels.
  • EDTA Chelation treatment usually results in a lowering of blood pressure.
  • EDTA Chelation treatment is known to heal ulcers caused by poor circulation, like those commonly found on the legs of some severely diabetic patients.

Perhaps the true wonder of EDTA chelation therapy is that this simple process of relocating free metallic ions and removing metallic build-up and free-radicals from the circulatory system, has not only translated into an improvement of symptoms like angina, breathlessness, inability to exercise, etc, for millions of people world-wide, but has reduced manifold the incidence of heart-attacks and strokes for these people, without the risks of heart surgery.

Does Chelation Therapy Have Side Effects?

Chelation therapy if administered properly, does not have any side-effects. However, it is very important that it is performed by a doctor or technician who is highly trained in the process. In every event, dosages, length of sessions and time lapse between sessions must be decided by a cardiologist trained in and experienced with chelation therapy. These decisions have to be based on the patient’s specific history and risk factors, and must take into account the functioning of the liver and kidneys, which are ultimately the organs that need to assist the chelation process by eliminating metallic ions from the body. Make sure that you go to a reputed Chelation clinic that follows strict protocol for chelation therapy.

Is Chelation Therapy Expensive?

The cost of chelation therapy in India would vary from clinic to clinic and chelation doctor to chelation doctor. Unfortunately, in India chelation therapy is not currently covered by medical insurance. However, IPC Heart Care Center’s very own Dr Pratiksha is working hard to get the government to take countries like the UK as a case in point and recognize the need to cover chelation therapy in medical insurance policies. In any event, the cost of chelation therapy in India is a pittance when compared with the cost of say a bypass or even an angioplasty surgery at a private hospital. However, we implore heart patients not to really compare the costs, but to undergo the treatment that their doctors and they feel is really right for them, after making an informed decision about the choices. For those who cannot afford the luxury of not considering costs, we do try to organize donations so we can offer our treatments at a discount to people who cannot afford them.

Why Undergo Chelation Therapy at IPC?

  • IPC has treated more than 10000 cases successfully. We monitor patients closely and follow international ACAM Protocol for treating our patient.
  • IPC has a 90% success rate. i.e. 90 out of 100 patients treated with Arterial Clearance Therapy at IPC Heart Care Center have shown improvements in arterial elasticity and blood flow to the heart, thus vastly reducing the possibilities of heart attack and premature deaths. Results vary from patient to patient, depending on the disease process.
  • Dr Pratiksha, the founder and head of IPC Heart Care Center, is a world-renowned preventive cardiologist. Dr Pratiksha and the IPC Heart Care Center team have been pioneers in the field of Preventive Cardiology in Maharashtra and have done path-breaking work in the field of non-surgical treatment of heart ailments.
  • IPC is in technical collaboration with Arterial Disease Clinic London and Manchester and uses protocol based on that of the American College of Advancement in Medicine.
  • IPC Heart Care Center has 4 branches in Mumbai, one each at Lower Parel, Borivali, Thane and Andheri. Dr Pratiksha divides her time equally among all branches. She will be most happy to see you if you call ahead for an appointment at the numbers on the ‘Contact Us’ page.

We would just like to emphasize here that proper patient selection process is most important for therapies like EECP and Chelation. These treatments are not suitable for everyone. Unfortunately today, as with every other therapy, there are people and centers offering these therapies when they are not authorized to do so. Consequently, people with contraindicated health complications, or people who do not need these therapies may be coaxed into taking them. These therapies can prove dangerous or even fatal for people with certain health issues (e.g. Chelation in decreased renal function), and even for healthy or appropriate candidates if proper protocols are not followed during administration.

Quacks Who Offer Chelation Therapy

Misuse of Chelation, for people who do not need it, or are unfit for Chelation treatment

Dr Elmer M.Cranton, M.D., is a global authority on Chelation Therapy. His book ‘Bypassing Bypass Surgery’ has sold over 2,00,000 copies worldwide. IPC Heart Care Foundation was generously given sole rights to reprint the book in India, and IPC’s Founder and Chairperson, Dr Pratiksha has jointly written the version of ‘Bypassing Bypass Surgery’ distributed in India, with Dr Cranton.
